How to get a PT33 cannabis prescription in Bangkok
Step by step: where to go, what to bring, what it costs, how long it lasts, and what tourists and expats need to know about Thailand's PT33 medical cannabis prescription.
Since June 2025 you need a PT33 prescription to buy cannabis flower legally in Thailand. The process is the same for Thai citizens, expats and tourists. Here is how it works in Bangkok.
Step 1: Choose where to get assessed
You have three options:
- A cannabis clinic. Dedicated clinics with doctors or Thai traditional medicine practitioners. See our Bangkok clinic list.
- A dispensary with an on-site or video practitioner. Many licensed shops now have a practitioner on site or arrange a short telemedicine consultation in the store.
- A hospital cannabis clinic. Some public hospitals run cannabis clinics, usually on set days and mainly for patients with specific conditions.
Step 2: Bring the right documents
- Your passport (foreigners) or Thai ID card. Bring the original.
- Any relevant medical records, if you have them.
- You must be 20 or older. Pregnant or breastfeeding women cannot be sold cannabis.
Foreign prescriptions and medical cannabis cards are not accepted.
Step 3: The consultation
The practitioner asks about your symptoms and medical history and decides whether cannabis is appropriate. Each of the seven authorised professions follows its own clinical guidelines. In modern medicine, recognised uses include epilepsy, nausea and vomiting from cancer treatment, nerve pain and muscle spasticity. Thai traditional medicine practitioners use their own guidelines, which cover conditions such as insomnia and loss of appetite.
If cannabis is judged appropriate, you receive a PT33 that records:
- the practitioner's name and licence number
- your name, age, nationality and ID or passport number
- your diagnosis
- the daily dose and total quantity
- how long it covers, up to a maximum of 30 days
Both you and the practitioner sign it.
Step 4: Buy from a licensed dispensary
Take your PT33 and your ID to a licensed shop. The shop must check the prescription, can only dispense up to the amount prescribed, and keeps a copy on file. Before you go, confirm the shop is on the official licence map.
What it costs
Fees vary by clinic. Examples published by Bangkok providers we checked:
- About 100 baht for an in-store telemedicine assessment (Stash BKK)
- 600 baht for an in-person consultation (Wonderland Clinic)
Flower is priced separately. Ask before your consultation.
How long it lasts
A PT33 covers up to 30 days. If you need treatment for longer, you need a new consultation and a new prescription.
Rules that still apply with a PT33
- Use only in private. Public use is not allowed.
- Do not share or resell what you are prescribed.
- Keep the PT33 and receipt with you while carrying cannabis.
- Do not take it out of the country. Your Thai prescription does not protect you at customs here or abroad.
Red flags
Walk away from any shop that sells flower without asking for a PT33, issues a "prescription" without any real consultation, lets people smoke inside, offers delivery, or isn't on the MC-GIS map.
